Internet Fraud Alert:
We received this one on 8-24-06.
A new twist to the credit card scam we have been seeing on the Internet where the perpetrator impersonates a bank or credit card company. The old scam was to say they had changed the security systems and you need to confirm your credit card number or bank account information. The new scam deals with disputing a charge from an order initiated through Paypal. Here is the complaint.
“I was on my computer last night and got a receipt saying I had purchased a hobby airplane engine for $399. At the bottom was a button to click to “dispute” the claim. I clicked the button, but then it asked for your credit card number or account number. Being the cynical person that I am, I called. The Paypal person said these are popping up all over. And people are giving the info to “dispute” the claim.
I was directed since I did not give personal info, to forward the e-mail to Paypal spoof, and delete it.”
Paypal says they never send an email without addressing you specifically by your full name. So the first clue is if it does not have your full name, “Dear (name)”. The second clue is that none of the links except the “dispute” link worked.
Don’t be fooled. This reporting person said the email was a perfect replica and even had a security section to repeat a code. If you are in doubt, contact Paypal if you have received a suspicious email requesting information.
